Archbishop Sebastian Vaniyapurackal was born on 29 March 1967 at Nirmalagiri in the Eparchy of Kanjirapally. After school education, he joined the Minor Seminary of Kanjirapally in 1982. He did his philosophical and theological studies at St. Thomas Apostolic Seminary, Vadavathoor. He was ordained Priest on 30 December 1992. He served as Assistant Parish Priest at St. George’s Forane Church, Kattappana. In 1995, he was appointed Director, Yuvadeepti, Kanjirapally. He was the Parish Priest at Koratty in 1999. He was sent for higher studies in 2000 and obtained a Doctorate in Canon Law from the Holy Cross University in Rome. After his return, he served as the Judicial Vicar of the Eparchy and Parish Priest in the parishes of Poomattam, Chennakunnu and Mulamkunnu.
He also served as Defender of the Bond at the Syro-Malabar Major Archiepiscopal Tribunal. He taught at the Benedictine Ashram, Kappad, Good Shepherd Major Seminary, Kunnoth and Nirmala Theological College, Podimattam. He was appointed Vice Chancellor at the Major Archiepiscopal Curia of the Syro-Malabar Church in 2014. He was elected the Second Curia Bishop of the Church and was consecrated on 12 November 2017, with the titular See of Troina.
He is one of the judges of the Synodal Tribunal, Chairman of the Search Committee for the selection of teaching staff at Synodal Major Seminaries, President of Syro-Malabar Dalit Vikas Society and Vice Chairman of KCBC SC/ST/BC Commission. Besides Malayalam, he speaks English, Italian and German. He is appointed as the Appointed as the Archbishop of Kalyan on 28 August 2025. On 19 October 2025 installed as first Metropolitan Archbishop of the Archeparchy of Kalyan by His Beatitude Mar Raphael Thattil at St. Thomas Cathedral Church, Kalyan (W).
